Introduction
Heart-type Fatty Acid-Binding Protein (h-FABP) is a small, highly cardiac-specific cytoplasmic protein responsible for transporting fatty acids within heart muscle cells. Due to its low molecular weight and high concentration in the heart, it is released into the bloodstream almost immediately following myocardial ischemia or tissue damage. Similar to Myoglobin, h-FABP levels can rise within just 1 to 3 hours after the onset of an acute myocardial infarction (AMI), but it offers significantly higher specificity to heart tissue. Its levels typically peak around 6 to 8 hours and return to baseline rapidly (usually within 24 to 30 hours). This rapid clearance makes it an excellent tool for tracking immediate changes in cardiac status.
