Introduction
Creatine Kinase-MB (CK-MB) is an isoenzyme of creatine kinase that is predominantly located in myocardial (heart muscle) tissue. It is a classic, well-established biomarker used for diagnosing acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and evaluating the extent of cardiac muscle damage. Following an acute myocardial injury, CK-MB levels typically begin to rise within 3 to 8 hours, peak around 16 to 24 hours, and return to baseline levels within 48 to 72 hours. Because its levels return to normal much more quickly than cTnI, CK-MB is particularly valuable for detecting early re-infarction (a second heart attack) shortly after an initial cardiac event.
Clinical Applications
Early detection of myocardial injury and myocarditis
Assess the area of myocardial injury
Surveillance of recurrent acute myocardial infarction
