Introduction
HbA1c (Glycated Hemoglobin) is formed when hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein inside red blood cells, naturally binds with glucose in the bloodstream.
Because red blood cells have an average lifespan of about 120 days, HbA1c levels reflect a patient's average blood sugar levels over the past 2 to 3 months.
Unlike a standard fasting glucose test, which only shows a snapshot of blood sugar at a single moment, HbA1c is not affected by recent meals, exercise, or acute stress, making it an exceptionally stable and reliable indicator.
Clinical Applications
Diagnosis of type-2 diabetes
Assessment of complication risk in diabetes patients
