Introduction

Soluble Fms-Like Tyrosine Kinase 1 (sFlt-1) is a tyrosine kinase protein produced by the placenta that acts as a potent anti-angiogenic factor during pregnancy.
It binds to pro-angiogenic proteins (like PLGF) in the bloodstream, preventing them from interacting with their receptors and effectively regulating blood vessel growth.
In pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia, placental stress causes sFlt-1 levels to become abnormally elevated, leading to endothelial dysfunction and maternal hypertension.
Calculating the ratio of sFlt-1 to PLGF is widely recognized as a highly reliable clinical method to predict the onset of preeclampsia weeks before physical symptoms appear.

Clinical Applications

Prediction of preeclampsia
Identification and diagnosis of preeclampsia
Treatment monitoring of preeclampsia
